At 70, Malcolm is set to run his first marathon at the Great Welsh Marathon on 17th March 2025. His running journey began just a few years ago, driven by a desire to improve his health. In October 2022, weighing 16st 2lb and facing rising diabetes numbers, he joined Slimming World, a decision that sparked his transformation.
By January 2023, Malcolm had lost weight and discovered a Couch to 5k program, which connected him to the supportive park-run community. What began as a way to be more active quickly turned into a passion, leading him to complete over 80 park runs.
Running has provided Malcolm with numerous physical benefits, including improved diabetes management—he’s cut his medication in half—and relief from back pain. Regular running and Pilates have helped him manage his back without physio treatments. Mentally, he’s experienced greater clarity and energy, saying:
“Running really has improved my mental health and gives me time to clear my head.”
As he prepares for the marathon, Malcolm feels a mix of excitement and apprehension, he added:
“It feels quite scary to be preparing for a marathon,” he admits, but he’s committed to his training, running three times a week and planning to increase to five as the race approaches. Hydration and managing his sugar levels remain key focuses.
While he once aimed for personal bests, his perspective has shifted with age.
“I now realise it’s better to reserve energy and keep going longer,” he reflects.
His goal is clear: to complete a marathon at 70, a milestone that motivates him daily.
Inspired by the beautiful course and the opportunity for a holiday in Wales, Malcolm views the Great Welsh Marathon as both a celebration of his progress and a chance to enjoy the Welsh countryside.
Malcolm’s journey showcases the power of determination and the positive impact running can have on health. His advice for others?
“I would definitely recommend running to improve health and manage diabetes. Couch to 5k is a great way to start.”
As he gears up for his first marathon, Malcolm’s story is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to start and that the finish line is always within reach—no matter your age.
