Terry’s love for running began over 40 years ago at the first Swansea 10k in 1981. While he spent his younger years playing local football, he stepped away from sports in 1999 due to work commitments. A decade passed without any regular exercise until, in 2010, a casual indoor football game reignited his passion for running. He entered the Swansea 10k that year, finishing in over 66 minutes. The next year, he improved his time to 56 minutes, marking the beginning of his running comeback.
In 2012, after gradually increasing his distances, Terry took on the ultimate challenge of many by entering the world of marathon running. That first race was the Great Welsh Marathon with us, and what’s more he managed to finish in just over four hours! The sense of accomplishment fuelled his desire to continue, and since then, he has regularly participated in marathon events. Now, Terry is preparing for a significant milestone: his tenth Great Welsh Marathon in 2025, just after running his 21st marathon in York.
Despite injuries that sidelined him in 2015 and 2016, Terry remains committed to running. While he admits that marathons are never easy, describing them as an “ordeal,” he relishes the challenge. His remarks that his favourite race was the 2022 Great Welsh Marathon, where “perfect weather and the new course made it particularly memorable.”
At 67, Terry knows his running days may be numbered, but he’s not slowing down. He runs in as many races as possible, finding joy in each finish line. His advice for aspiring marathoners is simple: preparation is key. He believes that with the right mindset and planning, anyone can tackle the marathon distance.
As Terry prepares for his tenth Great Welsh Marathon, his story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the joy of running, no matter the challenges. Look out for Terry on the start line at the 2025 Great Welsh Marathon as he continues his remarkable journey…Long may it continue!
